The Amherst County School Board opened a public hearing on the 2026–27 operating budget and heard public comment before taking several routine votes, including approval of a revised telehealth policy.
At the public hearing Jeff Porter of Madison Heights (District 5) urged the board to increase funding for career and technical education (CTE), ensure pay increases are equitably felt by classified employees and to strengthen civics instruction. "I want to encourage the board to really look at increasing funding to CTE offerings," Porter said, adding that he believes the division manages funds well and should communicate that story to the community.
The board then considered policy JHC (telehealth), which Dr. Wells said the policy committee had reviewed and recommended returning to the full board for action. "I would recommend approval of policy JHC which is telehealth policy," Dr. Wells said. A motion to approve the policy was made and seconded; the board voted unanimously in favor.
The consent agenda — covering routine items listed in board documents — was also moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
No budget vote was taken at the meeting; the public hearing provided an opportunity for comment and staff said formal budget actions will follow as the division finalizes numbers and awaits state revenue data.
