Board honors Kristen Thompson, recognizes students and staff at December meeting

The Amherst County School Board set aside much of its December meeting to honor outgoing member Kristen Thompson and to recognize students and staff from across the division.
Dr. Wells presented Thompson with a plaque thanking her for service to Amherst County Public Schools (school board member July 2016–Dec. 2025) and said she had a direct impact on “probably over 10,000 students” during her tenure. Thompson accepted the recognition and thanked staff and fellow board members, saying she was “deeply humbled” and proud to have served.
The board also presented Students and Staff of the Month for October and November from multiple schools, and the yearbook staff was recognized for receiving top honors from statewide and national press associations. Abby Hallman announced that the division’s autism program was selected as "best of Region 5" by the Community of Leaders in Autism, citing behavioral supports, transition programs and communication instruction as strengths.
No formal votes were required for recognitions. The board concluded the segment with several members offering personal thanks and holiday well-wishes to Thompson and division staff.
