Councilman Eugene Green on behalf of the City Council and the French Quarter Management District read a proclamation recognizing January 2026 as Blood Donor Awareness Month and urged residents to donate blood regularly.
Green invited representatives of the regional Blood Center and the Fry family to the podium. Misty Fry described her son’s multi-year leukemia treatment and said repeated transfusions and platelets were essential to his care, telling the council that ‘‘he wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for people donating blood and platelets.’’ Susie Potter, community development manager for the Blood Center, and other staff were introduced and thanked for their work.
Green cited regional figures presented during the meeting: the Blood Center reported year-to-date delivery of 51,392 blood components to area hospitals and noted that about 250 blood donations are required each day to meet patient needs. He also identified University Medical Center, the Manning Family Children’s Hospital and the Veterans Administration as major local recipients and stressed that EMS responders rely on a steady blood supply for trauma and surgical care.
The council invited the family and Blood Center staff forward for a photo following the proclamation. The council encouraged residents to use a 24-hour hotline provided by the Blood Center for donation information.
The proclamation was read into the record and the council closed the presentation by urging continued community participation in blood donation drives and awareness activities in January 2026.
