SOCORRO, Texas — The Socorro ISD Board of Trustees used a brief special meeting on Dec. 10 to spotlight student and staff achievements across the district, recognizing winners of a district art contest, championship athletic teams, award-winning counseling programs and the Pebble Hills High School marching band.
Daniel Escobar, the district's chief communications officer, opened the recognitions program "and it is my pleasure to introduce tonight's recognitions," reading a list of honorees and asking students, teachers and parents to the front for photographs. "Congratulations to these talented student artists," he said after announcing winners of the third annual SISD Dia de los Muertos showcase, which drew more than 200 entries and honored nine students across elementary, middle and high schools.
The board also recognized the high school tennis team for a district championship season, reported in the meeting as an undefeated 6–0 regular-season record and a 10–2 victory over Jefferson High School in the district final. Escobar read the roster and identified coaches Leilani Reyna and head coach Armando Gallego.
Escobar celebrated Eastlake High School's volleyball squad for repeating as district and area champions and noted the team spent 11 consecutive weeks ranked in the state top 10 and made back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances. He named several players and coaching staff, including head coach Bridal Deanda.
In counseling honors, Escobar announced five individual counselors and two counseling teams earned Lone Star awards from the Lone Star School Counselor Association (LSSSCA) for 2025 at bronze, silver and gold levels, singling out Rebecca Estrada as a gold recipient from Pazlo Norte Fine Arts Academy.
The meeting concluded with recognition of the Pebble Hills High School marching band for advancing to the 2025 state open-class marching band contest at the Alamodome in San Antonio; Escobar cited recent first-place finishes at the Texas Area Contest, SISD March Fest and the T Bridal Marching Contest. He introduced assistant band directors and the band's director, Maximo Sierra, and called students to the stairwell for a group photo.
No public comments or formal votes were recorded during the meeting. Escobar told attendees high-resolution photos taken by Mr. Largo would be posted on the district's website for download. The presiding officer adjourned the meeting at 6:08 p.m.
Next steps: the recognitions were ceremonial; no board action or formal referrals were made during the session.
