The Union of Public Safety Committee heard a broad update from the Gardner Fire Department on equipment, staffing and fleet projects.
A department representative told the committee the city was awarded a 2024 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant for new portable radios but must file an amendment because price increases and additional radio options mean the award will likely cover 37–38 radios rather than the 42 requested. The speaker said the city’s required match is 10% and described the award as “still a great…award” even though it will fund fewer units than originally sought.
The representative said all budgeted firefighter positions are filled but one firefighter remains on extended, modified duty from an on-the-job injury with no anticipated return date. Overtime spiked during the training and graduation of three new recruits but weekly overtime expenditures have “significantly slowed” since they returned to full duty.
On fleet matters, the department reported it is moving forward with purchasing a used Westminster ambulance previously approved by council; Westminster’s new ambulance delivery is expected after the new year, after which Gardner will finalize the purchase. A new tower ladder ordered from E-1 Fire Apparatus is on schedule for production before the end of 2026 with delivery anticipated in 2027, consistent with the manufacturer’s 30–36 month estimate.
The department reported that roof replacement work at fire headquarters is complete and there are currently no leaks. For activity levels, the department said that as of Dec. 1 it has responded to 5,750 calls for emergency assistance and its ambulance has transported 1,359 patients to area hospitals.
The committee asked no substantive follow-up questions during the presentation. The department representative thanked the committee and left to attend another commitment; the chair then moved the agenda forward.
