Mayor Freddie DeCort told the Iberia Parish Council on Dec. 10 that speed cameras located in a school zone had been deactivated, that the cameras will be removed, and that all tickets issued at that location will be refunded.
"Those cameras have been deactivated. Those cameras will be removed, and all tickets given in that ... speed school zone will be refunded," DeCort said. He estimated the refunds would total about $24,000 and explained the city's contractual partner, Blue Line, had provided the camera infrastructure under an agreement in which the city received 60% of revenue and the vendor 40%.
DeCort apologized to the community and said the city is compiling information and processing refunds; he estimated it could take about a month to complete refunds. After the mayor's statement, the public works committee chose to delete an agenda item that would have asked legal counsel to request an attorney general opinion on the Despit/Desperate Road speed camera. Council members praised the mayor and city staff for the swift corrective action and commended the transparency of the response.
The committee voted to delete the AG‑opinion request; the meeting record shows committee members concluded no further immediate legal action was required based on the mayor's report but retained the option to revisit legal questions if new facts emerge.
