The Gadsden City Council opened its Nov. 25 meeting by recognizing the undefeated Gadsden Pumas 12U soccer team for its state championship, inviting coaches and players for photos and brief remarks.
Mayor Buster Porch provided a citywide update on community Thanksgiving efforts, saying volunteers organized 13 meal sites across the city and citing 10,996 meals served in one day last year. Porch listed several sites and times for the coming days, including Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church (408 N. 9th St., 11 a.m.–2 p.m.), Universal Worship Center (1608 Fillmore Ave., 3 p.m.–6 p.m.), Freedom Center (1601 W. Meighan Blvd., 11 a.m.–2 p.m.) and multiple Baptist churches serving staggered hours on Thanksgiving Day.
Craig Scott, director of the (transcript: 'Gazzin') Public Library, introduced intern Madeline Peavy from Jacksonville State University’s School of Social Work and described the intern’s role assisting patrons with social-service needs.
Council members praised volunteers and faith partners for coordinating the large community effort, encouraged use of the 2-1-1 referral line to track service reach, and previewed holiday events: the Gadsden Christmas parade on Friday, Dec. 5, and a Christmas tree lighting at Riverside Park at 6:30 p.m.
Next steps: organizers will proceed with scheduled meal service and holiday events; council thanked volunteers and community partners for continued support.
