At the commission meeting, UDOT staff presented the department’s ‘0 Fatalities’ strategic performance measures and the safety dashboard, telling commissioners the agency is tracking progress while acknowledging the scale of the problem.
The presenter reported a current fatality rate of about 0.72 and said vehicle miles traveled for the year is approximately 35,000,000,000. "So for the so far this year, we're sitting at about 251 fatalities for the year," the speaker said, adding that the department views the trend as moving toward the 0‑fatalities goal even while noting lives lost are unacceptable.
The department provided a vulnerable‑user breakdown: 113 fatalities in the vulnerable category including 36 pedestrians, 7 bicyclists and 70 motorcyclists. The presenter noted some measures are below targeted reductions while others — suspected serious injuries — were above targets and that the crash total exceeded 50,000 for the year.
UDOT staff said the safety dashboard contains detailed breakdowns (roadway departures, intersections, work zones, wrong‑way driving) and flagged that the link to the dashboard can be hard to find on the website; staff committed to placing the dashboard in a more prominent location for commissioners and the public.
The presenter closed with a reminder about the department's five safe‑driving behaviors and invited commissioners to review the online dashboards and follow up with questions for deeper analysis.
