Medina — Mayor Dennis Hanwell used the City Council’s final meeting of 2025 to thank staff, council and the public as he marked his last council session after 42 years of public service.
"Besides my faith and family, it's been my greatest honor to serve the city, the residents, the businesses, and the many visitors," Hanwell said, addressing the council and public. He reviewed recent event attendance figures and expressed hope the cooperative relationship between council and administration continues.
During the meeting the council presented plaques recognizing service: a plaque for James A. (Jim) Shields noting service from 01/01/2002–12/31/2025, and a plaque for Paul Rose Sr. noting service from 01/01/2010–12/31/2025. Each outgoing member offered brief remarks thanking residents, colleagues and staff.
Several department heads and officials reflected on Hanwell’s tenure. Chief Kenny of the police department thanked the mayor for hiring and supporting police initiatives; Fire Chief Walters highlighted mayoral support for staffing and equipment; City Engineer Patton and other department leaders praised the mayor’s leadership and wished him well in retirement.
Councilmembers also paid tribute. Councilman Jim Shields reflected on 24 years of service and said he looks forward to serving as mayor in the next term; outgoing Councilman Paul Rose Sr. summarized accomplishments including SPCA accounting reforms and creation of the emerging technologies committee.
The presentations and tributes concluded with a short public celebration and the council adjourned for the year.
