Chair Sheba Hussain told commissioners the Revere Cultural Council declined the HRC's application for a "community circles and communications" project, saying the proposal "is not gonna provide enough public benefit," according to the council's feedback.
Hussain said she, Doctor Garcia and Commissioner Pitch drafted an appeal requesting more detailed feedback so the commission can improve a future submission. "Our project spans all 6 wards of Revere," Hussain said, arguing the proposal serves broad constituencies; she added that local funds were limited — the meeting transcript records a description of City Hall support as "a grand" — and urged commissioners to explore additional grant sources and partnerships.
Dr. Garcia recommended clarifying application language, seeking grants from organizations whose values align with the commission, and cultivating partnerships with other municipal human-rights commissions. The commission agreed to make funding diversification a priority and to have the Community Outreach group look for nonlocal grant opportunities and collaborators.
No new grant awards were reported and the Cultural Council outcome stands for now; commissioners plan to resubmit in future cycles and to pursue other funders to support HRC projects.
