Sports Basement held a grand opening for its newest South Bay store at the Hawthorne Gateway Center, offering retail merchandise, a rental shop for skis, snowboards and bicycles, community event space and a membership program that the retailer said will support local charities.
"It's a pretty active neighborhood ... this is perfect," a store representative said, describing Hawthorne as a good fit for the chain's expansion. The store occupies about 40,000 square feet at 14351 Hindry Avenue, according to HCTV coverage by Tony Long Junior.
The retailer promoted a one‑time $25 "basement tier" membership that the store said unlocks ongoing savings, including 10% off purchases, and allows members to select a local beneficiary. During the grand opening the store said proceeds from opening‑day activities will support the Boys and Girls Club of Carson. A store spokesperson highlighted the rental program, saying customers can rent equipment for a weekend, a month or a season.
Attendees told HCTV the store fills a local need for seasonal gear and year‑round outdoor equipment. "It's really nice to have, and they have good deals," one customer said.
Tony Long Junior reported that the store will offer space for community events such as fitness classes, team meetings and fundraisers. The report did not include numbers for new hires or exact economic projections for Hawthorne.
