The Syracuse City Public Arts Commission approved a two-part mural by artist Ali Walker for the C & C Mini Mart on North Salinas Street, the commission voted during its regular meeting.
Walker told commissioners she plans a dusk skyline across the entryway and a corner piece titled “Jump Shot,” describing a generic basketball player rendered in an orange-and-blue palette. The artist said the new owner supports the work and that crews repaired the bottom exterior of the wall and the adjacent sidewalk over the summer.
Commissioners pressed the artist on presentation materials and possible visual similarities to commercial or league logos. One commissioner noted that seeing designs in color changes impressions and may distinguish the mural from recognizable marks. Walker said she avoids trademarked looks and that color will help clarify the design. She also described a maintenance approach: priming surfaces, applying a UV protective coating and an informal owner-artist agreement to address vandalism quickly; she estimated that properly finished murals typically last seven to eight years.
A motion to approve the proposal was made, seconded and called to a vote; commissioners voiced their support and the motion passed. After the vote, Saisha Berg, who identified herself as commissioner of parks and said she lives in the neighborhood, welcomed the added color to the storefront. Commissioners asked Walker to notify the commission when the work is complete and she said she would.
Next steps: the artist said the timeline slipped from a planned summer installation and the team now hopes to begin work in spring weather, starting on the front of the building and then the back. The commission did not record a roll-call vote with named tallies in the transcript; the meeting record notes the motion passed.
