Planning staff report Sunflower Quarry annual inspection: no violations, reclamation ongoing

County planning staff presented the annual inspection of Sunflower Quarry Dec. 11. Sean Penley summarized the October site visit and the operator's reclamation reporting.

Penley told commissioners that during the last reporting period the quarry disturbed 6.3 acres and reclaimed 3.2 acres; completed reclamation to date is approximately 65 acres, with areas seeded and covered with topsoil in accordance with the conditional use permit. Penley said the operator, Martin Marietta, provided a reclamation plan and aerial maps documenting completed reclamation.

Staff noted two blasting complaints from neighbors during 2025; blast logs and vibration data reviewed by staff were within county regulatory limits and staff provided responses to the neighbors with the data. No violations were reported for the quarry in 2025 and the quarry remains in compliance with the conditional use permit.

Commissioners thanked planning staff for the inspection and noted ongoing coordination with the operator.
