School social workers Jen Davis and Michelle Todd presented a proposal on Dec. 8 to create "Octorara Brave Haven," a confidential resource located in two rooms at the Octorara Annex where students and families can receive clothing, food, hygiene items and other essentials by referral and appointment.
Davis described the service as open to any Octorara student or family and emphasized confidentiality and appointment-based access. One room is planned for food and household essentials and the other for clothing, shoes and winter outerwear. The presenters said donations are already coming in and that staff will inspect donations for condition and expiration dates before distribution. Inventory tracking will be maintained and student volunteers — including CTE program students who may build shelving — are expected to assist with organization and data tracking.
The presenters said the program will coordinate with school counselors and administrators to accept referrals rather than operate as an open public pantry; families will make appointments and staff will be present to assist. A communications director is preparing a flyer and a QR code for sign-up; the QR code was not yet active at the time of the presentation.
Board members asked practical questions about sizing, logistics and whether items may be gently used; presenters said gently used items are acceptable when in good condition. The social workers noted Thanksgiving boxes had already been distributed and they hope to run a Christmas drive and accept gift certificates from local businesses. Board members encouraged student club involvement for outreach and logistics.
The board expressed appreciation for the presenters’ work and for their plans to involve students and community partners. No formal vote was required; the presentation was accepted as informational.
