The Vigo County Commissioners presented the Francis Vigo Award — the county’s highest honor — to Duke Bennett at their Dec. 8 meeting, recognizing a long record of public service that included time as mayor of Terre Haute and later state service overseeing grant programs.
"On behalf of all 3 Vigo County commissioners, we're proud today to present the Francis Vigo Award," Speaker 2 said, and described Bennett's local roots and civic service. The presentation cited Bennett's years as mayor, his work at the Hampton Center, his role as executive director of the Office of Community and Rural Affairs overseeing more than $120,000,000 in grant funding, and decades of volunteer work including youth sports and service as a special deputy with the Vigo County Sheriff's Department.
Colleagues shared personal memories. Speaker 4 praised Bennett’s steady presence: "I can't thank you enough to step up to the challenges ... Duke steps up." Speaker 5 recalled Bennett offering encouragement during an early campaign and said he inspired others to seek public office. Speakers emphasized Bennett’s unpaid civic leadership across boards and committees and his continuing local involvement, including work with the Candles Holocaust Museum.
The commissioners framed the award as recognition for community members who "don't seek recognition for what they do, but simply keep showing up and doing the work." The presentation was followed by public comment and additional agenda business.
