The Los Angeles City Public Safety Committee on Dec. 10, 2025 approved the appointment of Samantha Burke to the Police Permit Review Panel for a term ending June 30, 2026. The committee voted to confirm the appointment during its meeting after a brief introduction by the appointee and comments from committee members.
Burke introduced herself to the committee, saying, “My name is Samantha Burke. I’m a true Angeleno by heart...for the past decade, I have served my community as secretary for the North Area Neighborhood Development Council,” and describing earlier participation in youth programs with the Los Angeles Police Department. She said those experiences “gave me the foundation and knowledge of law enforcement procedures, community policing, and principles that are dedicated to serve the men and women of Los Angeles.”
Burke said her family background informed her interest in public safety: her mother is a retired deputy sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and her father worked with Southern California Edison responding to natural disasters. She thanked the office of “Karen Pass” for support during the appointment process and pledged to approach the panel’s work “with impartiality, integrity, and a genuine dedication to serving our community fairly.”
A councilmember who spoke during the meeting thanked Burke for volunteer work during the Palisades fire and for community engagement. The chair then recommended approval and the clerk recorded the roll call: Councilmember Lee Aye; Councilmember Price Aye; Councilmember McOsker Yes; Councilmember Sotomayor Martinez absent; Councilmember Park Yes. The chair announced the appointment approved.
The Police Permit Review Panel advises the city on permits and conditions tied to public events that require police oversight. Burke’s term was read into the record as ending June 30, 2026.
Note on name discrepancy: the clerk read the appointment as “Ms. Samantha Berg” into the record; the appointee introduced herself orally as “Samantha Burke.” The committee record reflects the clerk’s read item; the appointee’s self-identification during the meeting was “Samantha Burke.”
