The Hudson Library Foundation presented a capital campaign and renovation plan for the Hudson Library, a community branch in Highlands that the presenters described as the second‑oldest library in North Carolina. Andy Schmarr, former president of the foundation, and Philip Kikuru, current president, outlined interior renovations (new study and conference rooms, updated shelving and lighting) and new exterior features including a 640‑square‑foot pavilion, storage building and accessible paths.
Foundation leaders said the total campaign aims at roughly $1.5 million: approximately $1 million for interior work and about $1 million for exterior (presenters explained those proportions as campaign allocations and fundraising estimates). The foundation requested that the county consider including a $350,000 line item during the upcoming budget season to help close the campaign’s funding gap.
Commissioners welcomed the presentation, asked about timing and budgeting, and indicated the county’s budget process (departmental meetings beginning Feb. 1 and budget adoption by July 1) would determine whether the county could commit funds. Staff offered to follow up with workshops and additional conversations; the foundation said it would be available to work with the county on next steps.
