Neil Majardan, executive director of the Downtown Reno Partnership (DRP), briefed the board on the nonprofit business improvement district's (BID) work in central Reno. Majardan described DRP as a privately funded 501(c)(6) that augments city services with cleaning crews, hospitality ambassadors, outreach, security guards, marketing and economic development support for roughly 110 downtown blocks.
He highlighted operational outputs over the prior 12 months: DRP staff and contractors picked up about 307,000 pounds of street trash and illegally dumped items, removed more than 1,100 pieces of graffiti, performed about 2,900 power washes, completed some 30,000 resident/business/property checks and provided more than 1,200 rides to shelters and services. Majardan said DRP's ambassadors and security augmentation have helped reduce crime in the core of the BID by about 17.9% over several years and that these outcomes are part of a coordinated approach with police, code enforcement and city maintenance teams.
Majardan described several practical tools: a public parking map and QR code for downtown parking information, foot‑traffic analytics (Placer AI) to support business recruitment, and a hotline for park or encampment concerns. He also described DRP's work with Union Pacific on track patrolling and cited partnerships for trash‑can installations and planter pilot projects to improve downtown aesthetics.
In response to board questions, Majardan said the BID cannot unilaterally expand its legal footprint; to change the BID boundary would require dissolving and re‑forming the BID or creating a separate district. He encouraged board members to use the DRP hotline (provided in board materials and mentioned in the meeting) or to join DRP's city walks and district‑specific meetings for direct observation and coordination.
What follows: DRP said it will share meeting and walk schedules with the board and track requested follow‑ups such as verifying the location of newly installed trash cans and coordinating visits to Broadhead Park and other neighborhood sites.
