The commission heard a public presentation about croquet on Dec. 8 and directed staff to study whether a croquet facility could be installed at Veterans Park or at other city locations.
Frank Monnier (introduced to the commission as a croquet expert and executive director of the Croquet Foundation of America) described croquet as low‑impact, inexpensive to construct relative to other sports facilities, and usable year‑round in South Florida. "This is smaller than a tennis court," he said, explaining playing surfaces, maintenance requirements (grass cut to a low height) and programming possibilities for youth, adaptive players and tournaments. He noted the National Croquet Center and other regional clubs as partners for programming and maintenance support.
Commissioners asked staff to evaluate feasibility and costs, and to consider alternative sites such as the municipal golf course. The city manager recommended staff coordinate with croquet experts and return with a feasibility presentation in the coming weeks.
No funding decision was made; the item was moved to staff for a feasibility study and a future presentation.
