Board members at the North Kansas City Schools meeting opened by recognizing student and staff achievements and community partnerships.
Dr. Avila introduced five student swim medalists — Logan Lawrence, Sam Henninfant, Garrison Wells, Evan Taber and Levi Skaggs — who finished on the podium at this year's state boys swim and dive championships. Students and the board discussed the early-morning practice schedules and family support that underpin competitive athletics.
The board also honored Taim Aljalad (Oak Park) and Adrian Mattinger (Staley), automotive-technology students who won first place in the 2025 Student Engine Assembly Competition at the Apex Conference in Las Vegas by disassembling and reassembling a small-block Chevy V8 in 1 hour, 44 minutes. Their teacher, Mr. Stowe, described a short-notice signup and the students credited hands-on classroom experience.
District leaders recognized community partnerships with the KC Current, which hosted middle-school girls for stadium tours and career-exploration activities. Deprice Taylor, KC Current executive director for community relations, said the club leverages its platform to connect students with career and STEM opportunities.
The board also presented awards to staff: Shannon Drummond was recognized for leading kindergarten-readiness events that grew into a wide community resource fair serving more than 240 families; and three special-education employees ' Corey Theis, Stacy Parsons and Melissa Rud ' were honored for direct-service work, organizing donated equipment and piloting demonstration-classroom practices.
Superintendent Daniels asked honorees and family members to be recognized by the board and encouraged guests to stay for the remainder of the meeting. The recognitions segment concluded before the board moved to routine business and financial updates.
