The Adams County Parks & Recreation Committee voted to postpone a decision on purchasing a medical examiner walk‑in cooler until its next meeting, citing incomplete information and a late vendor response.
Bethany, a medical examiner office staff member, told the committee the office’s removal process has recently changed and, when a funeral home is not named, the office is making removals itself. "We do have a body cooler out at the impound lot. However, it has been needing some consistent monitoring and calibration to maintain the appropriate temperature," she said, describing reliability concerns with the current unit.
Cynthia and other staff said they had attempted to negotiate a memorandum of understanding with Roseberry Funeral Home but that the funeral home declined an MOU, creating uncertainty about outside support. Bill, who described placing the existing cooler in a secured impound bay, provided a preliminary cost estimate: "Approximate cost for a three‑cot roll in cooler will be somewhere in the range of $12,000 I believe," and with associated electrical and door work "a good estimate, $15,000."
Supervisor Jerry Taylor moved to postpone action until the committee could obtain clearer cost figures and a fuller response from Roseberry; the motion was seconded and the committee voted to carry the postponement. The chair directed staff to gather missing vendor and compatibility information and return the item at the next meeting.
The postponement means the county will continue to rely on interim accommodations while staff confirm whether the impound cooler can be made reliably serviceable and whether an outside vendor will resume removals under an agreed arrangement. The committee did not take action to purchase the new unit at this meeting and asked that cost breakdowns and vendor responses be provided before further consideration.
