Trader Joe's opened its Goodyear location in 2025 after a multi‑year effort by residents and city staff to attract the retailer.
City hosts Jordan Berg and Tammy Vogue said the move followed resident retail surveys that began in 2017 and persistent outreach. "We kind of teased that something big was gonna be announced," Berg said of a May 2025 civic‑square unveiling that drew hundreds.
Chris Warren, identified on the show as the store captain for Trader Joe's Goodyear, said the store will reflect local character: "Our mascot for Trader Joe's Goodyear will be a burrowing owl," Warren said, and the store will feature a community‑chosen mascot, site‑specific artwork referencing the site's scallion‑farm history and partnerships to donate unused food to local charities. "We work with, local shares partners so we could donate all of our unused food to the community," Warren said.
Hosts described a large opening‑day crowd, saying lines wrapped around the building and down nearby streets; Berg estimated several hundred people waited for opening. The hosts framed the arrival as the result of combined resident interest, city economic development work and private developer Red Development's role in the Globe/Goodyear Civic Square project.
The city encouraged residents to use established community feedback channels—such as the biennial retail survey—that had repeatedly listed Trader Joe's as a top request, hosts said. The city did not provide specific sales projections or economic‑impact studies on the show; those figures were described in general terms by hosts and by Trader Joe's staff.
