The Georgetown City Council on Dec. 9 approved a series of administrative and public-safety items, including reappointments, asset transfers and grant acceptance.
Mayor Jenkins presented an executive order to reappoint John Soulsby to the Board of Ethics for a second term; the council approved the reappointment by voice vote. The council also reappointed Jeff Clockey to the GMWSS Board of Commissioners; that reappointment passed with one recorded nay on the voice vote and the clerk was asked to note the vote in the record.
On public-safety matters, council approved a municipal order to transfer an aging ambulance to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office; staff said the vehicle had been in city service for years and the sheriff’s office welcomed the transfer. The council also approved a municipal order to contract for a police and dispatch facility needs assessment, a budgeted item intended to inform future facility and funding decisions for the departments.
Finally, council accepted a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant (resolution 2025) to fund the police department’s special victims unit. City staff clarified that VAWA funding will be used primarily for salaries of officers assigned to the unit rather than for shelter operations.
Council discussion confirmed staffing and recruiting context from the police committee report earlier in the meeting: the department reported 66 sworn officers, three awaiting physicals/drug screens, three in background checks and active recruiting and training pipelines for dispatch positions.
