Goodyear officials and staff lit a Christmas tree at Goodyear Civic Square and opened 'Holidays on the Square' on a festive evening that features free family activities and a synthetic ice rink.
Jordan, a city host broadcasting from the square, described the scene as a "winter wonderland," said the event is free for all ages and highlighted multiple selfie spots, vendor booths, arts and crafts and live performances from youth groups.
Dawn of Goodyear Parks and Recreation said the rink is open Friday through Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m., through Dec. 28. "No reservations needed," she said, adding that skate sessions are 30 minutes long, participants sign a waiver on site and attendees should "just remember your socks."
Aria, chair of the Goodyear Youth Commission, spoke about activities for children at the crafts tables, including ornament-making and letters to Santa. "My favorite so far was a candy cane one," she said, describing how kids decorate and take home ornaments.
Mayor Joe Pazzillo, joined by members of the Goodyear City Council, thanked staff who organized the event and led the crowd in a countdown before the tree was lit. "On behalf of the city council, city of Goodyear staff, management office, and all, happy holidays, everybody," he said after the lighting.
Organizers reminded visitors there is added parking north of the library and in the parking garage; the recommended entry is off McDowell Road with a suggested exit on Monte Vista. Food trucks, retail vendors and live music from Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Teen Center were scheduled to follow the tree lighting.
The city encouraged families to return for themed weekend nights, including a "Charlie Brown Christmas" performance on Dec. 12. The rink will continue to operate Fridays through Sundays through Dec. 28 with walk-up, 30-minute sessions; waivers are completed on site.
