The Italian Village Commission voted to approve a certificate of appropriateness (COA2500977) permitting a 26.5-inch by 13-inch metal hanging sign and an outdoor security camera at 1119 Mount Pleasant, allowing the business to retain work already completed.
Historic Preservation Office staff told the commission the hanging sign adheres to the Short North design guidelines for signage and recommended approval; staff noted the outdoor camera fell outside staff-approval authority because the work had already been completed and directed the commission to review that portion of the application.
Studio owner Buzzy Bittinger, who identified themself as owner of Studio West 614, apologized to the commission for not seeking permission before installing the sign and briefly described personal circumstances that contributed to the oversight. "I was also in the middle of breast cancer treatment... I'm now cancer free, so we're on the other side of that," Bittinger said. Commissioners responded with support for the business and welcomed the tenant's investment in the formerly unmaintained storefront.
A motion to approve COA2500977 as submitted was moved and seconded; commissioners voiced support and approved the application by voice vote. The transcript does not include a roll-call tally.
The decision allows the existing sign and the security camera to remain in place under the commission’s approval; staff cited the Short North design guidelines (signage) as the basis for their recommendation and will retain the file for future reference.
Next procedural steps: the commission recorded approval during the hearing; there was no further appeal recorded in the transcript.
