Riley County commissioners approved a countywide Notary Fraud Alert service Dec. 4 after a presentation by Amy Mangos, Register of Deeds.
Mangos described the optional service, offered through Fiddler Technologies, as a tool that indexes notary names and sends daily, weekly or monthly summaries of recorded documents that bear a notary’s name. She said the service does not prevent fraud but allows registered notaries to detect potential impersonations earlier by comparing recorded documents to their notary logbooks.
Mangos told the commission the county will cover a one‑time licensing and setup fee of $8,000 and an ongoing annual maintenance fee of $17.50, with funding available from registered‑deeds technology funds so no additional county appropriation is required. The service complements the county’s existing property‑fraud alerts for residents.
A commissioner moved to approve the service agreement with Fiddler Technologies; the motion was seconded and recorded as approved in the transcript (no roll‑call tally was provided). Mangos said the program is already in use by other counties and that notaries can opt in and select the frequency of alerts.
County staff will finalize the vendor agreement and the sign‑up process for local notaries. The service is intended to expedite detection of fraudulent use of notary names on recorded documents and to help protect property owners and notaries from impersonation schemes.
