The Centreville Town Council voted Dec. 4 to approve the purchase and installation of three ADA‑compliant glass doors with digital code locks at 105 North Liberty Street after staff detailed repeated unauthorized entries into the building’s laundry room.
Karen, a town staff member who presented the request, said the lowest estimate for the three doors came in at $21,002.25 and that electrical work to install digital locking systems was quoted at $1,522. She told the council the project "will really make everybody feel safe" and that the town could cover the cost from excess revenue and public‑works agreement (PWA) funds tied to the property. Karen said the building houses 11 residents and that the town purchased the property in 2016–17 as a rental asset.
A council member moved to approve the purchase and installation of "3 security doors at 105 North Liberty Street" and associated electrical work; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote. The council did not identify a formal mover or seconder on the record beyond the motion being made and seconded.
The cost figures on the record contained minor inconsistencies: the presenter cited a combined total of $22,007.47 when summarizing estimates, while the motion language recited the door price and referenced an additional electrical bill separately. The council approved the expenditure as presented and directed staff to proceed with the capital purchase, using available excess rental and PWA funds.
The decision comes after residents reported people entering and sleeping in the laundry room. Karen said the existing doors are old keyed mechanical doors that cannot be retrofitted to meet ADA or electronic-locking requirements without full door replacement.
The council also received a brief update that Public Works has budgeted $80,000 this year for a vehicle purchase and is proceeding with an approximately $50,001.90 vehicle and upfitting; that item was presented as an informational update, not a separate action.
The council did not set a public hearing or additional conditions on the door purchase; staff will proceed with procurement.
