Harlingen — The City Commission recognized two community leaders and organizations during the meeting.
A proclamation honored Sunshine Haven Incorporated on its 25th anniversary (proclamation text recited by staff), noting its no-cost end-of-life care across Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties and the organization's reliance on city support and CDBG funds. Edward Camarillo, representing Sunshine Haven, thanked the city and noted that roughly half of the organization's patients come from Harlingen.
The commission also read a proclamation recognizing Guadalupe 'Lupita' Armendariz for more than three decades of STEM education and outreach. Armendariz recounted highlights of her career, mentioned recruiting astronaut Jose Hernandez to programs and thanked the city for the honor. Commissioners and the mayor posed for photos with the honorees.
