The Norwalk Shellfish Commission approved an application for waterside bulkhead remediation at 108 Water Street, adding a specific requirement that a weighted turbidity curtain be installed to confine turbidity during demolition and construction. The applicant, identified in the meeting as Matt, confirmed the DEEP application includes installation of a turbidity curtain as part of the project.
Commissioner Pete Johnson moved to approve the application with “standard language plus a specific mention of weighted turbidity curtains.” Chair Steve seconded the motion. The commission called the vote and the motion carried; the chair said staff would provide the paperwork to the applicant.
Matt described the proposed turbidity-control measure during the discussion: “In our DEEP application, we have a turbidity curtain being installed to confine the work area before we start, demolition or removal of any existing structures. ... We installed a — it's a weighted, curtain with a float on top. So the weight holds the bottom of it on the bottom, obviously, and the float draws it up so the entire water column is confined during construction.”
The commission’s action adds the specific turbidty-curtain language to the standard approval conditions. After the vote the chair said, “We'll get the paperwork out to you,” and the applicant acknowledged the decision.
Next steps: staff will issue the formal paperwork reflecting the commission-approved conditions. The commission did not record any opposed votes in the meeting audio; those present voiced ayes and the chair declared the motion carried.
