The Superior Common Council approved a resolution April 18 authorizing steps to accept an M60A3 tank for public display at the Bong Center, after a presentation from veterans’ and project representatives.

Speakers said the tank has been reserved for 90 days pending required documentation from the U.S. Army. Project leaders outlined the Army’s conditions: the municipality must provide minutes from an official council meeting granting permission to display the equipment on city land; the group must construct a display pad (recommended size 14 by 24 feet with 8 inches of 4,000-psi concrete and welded wire fabric); provide a transporter letter on company letterhead with contact information and insurance details; and submit a photograph of the completed pad and display site. Once those conditions are met, the Army will proceed with documentation to assign the equipment to the recipient organization while the equipment remains U.S. government property.

Representatives said they had encountered paperwork delays and opposition from parties in Spooner but had secured congressional engagement and a conditional hold on the equipment. Several councilors thanked the volunteers and supporters and the council approved the resolution by voice vote.

The resolution authorizes staff and the sponsoring organization to complete the Army’s requirements and to proceed toward a formal dedication once the transfer conditions are satisfied.
