Torrington — The City Council voted to purchase a historic sleigh once displayed in the Yankee Peddler Hotel for $1,800 after adding the item to the agenda by the required two-thirds vote.

The mayor explained the sleigh (described commonly in the meeting as a wagon/sleigh associated with the Yankee Peddler) was located at an antique dealer in Burrillville and the owner sought to recoup storage and auction expenses. The council discussed potential display options, including cooperation with the new owners of the Yankee Peddler, Preservation Torrington or the Historical Society. Funding was described as coming from a city Christmas/decorations fund that will be diminished by the purchase.

A speaker identifying themself as president of Preservation Torrington later thanked the council and offered to work with the city to find a permanent display site for the sleigh or wagon.

The motion to buy the item for $1,800 passed by voice vote.
