Jackson County commissioners discussed aging solid-waste vehicles and authorized staff Nov. 24 to bid up to $30,000 for a surplus F-750 dump truck at an upcoming December auction.
Public Works staff described a failing 2008 F-550 used for patching (over 220,000 miles) with an engine seizure and repair quotes in the low–mid $20,000 range. Staff recommended pursuing a surplus 2005/2008 F-750 at auction with about 117,000 miles as a cost-effective replacement. "With only 117,000 miles on this, we feel like it's a viable option," Speaker 2 said.
Commissioner discussion focused on operating reserves (Speaker 6 noted about $500,000 in reserves), potential landfill rate increases from Scottsboro (estimated impact ~$80,000), and resale expectations (staff expects better resale value at the auction). A motion to set aside the immediate purchase vote for four weeks failed for lack of a second; later, the commission voted to authorize Mister Campbell to bid not to exceed $30,000 for the F-750. The motion passed by voice vote ('aye').
Why it matters: Staff said replacing a failing truck avoids costly engine repairs and helps maintain solid-waste operations. Commissioners weighed short-term cash reserves against long-term operating needs.
What happens next: The county will place a bid at the December auction and, if successful, proceed with procurement under the fund and budget authorities noted in the meeting (Fund 100 identified as the likely source). The commission requested staff follow up on sale/resale value and fund balances.
