The Community Services Commission formally recognized retiring Recreation & Human Services Director John Aguirre for 36 years with the city.

Chair Gerber and foundation members praised Aguirre’s long service and dedication; foundation representative Gary Boyer called Aguirre a “positive force” and thanked him for steady leadership. The commission announced that Annie Warner was selected to serve as interim Recreation & Human Services Director beginning in January.

Annie Warner presented the Shining Star Award honoring Mike Diaz for his work as a recreation specialist at Louis Pompey Sports Park. Diaz was not in attendance and will be sent the meeting link; staff highlighted his “strong work ethic, positive attitude, and team-first mindset.”

Aguirre thanked staff and said, “I have the best staff in the city,” adding that he expects to remain involved in community activities after his retirement. The commission closed with congratulatory remarks and refreshments after the meeting.
