Opelika — The Opelika City Council opened a first reading on Nov. 18 for an ordinance to amend the zoning map at 1401 Speedway Drive. The request seeks to rezone approximately 1.933 acres from R5M (residential) to C2 (commercial).

The council had earlier declared a public hearing open on the proposal and, after calling for public comment, heard none and closed the hearing. At the regular meeting a council member introduced the ordinance as item 15 and stated this would be the first reading.

No formal vote on the ordinance was recorded at the Nov. 18 meeting. The presenter asked for a council member to introduce the item for the record and indicated it would proceed as the first reading; any subsequent readings, public notice or additional hearings will follow the city's standard ordinance adoption process.
