At its Sept. meeting the Cornwall Central School District Board reviewed a set of draft board goals developed at a recent working session and urged administration and trustees to make the goals measurable and to integrate them with strategic planning and budget decisions.
The draft goals, drawn from state and national board responsibilities, cover instruction, student achievement and equity, facilities, finance and policy oversight. Trustee discussion focused on measurable outcomes and how the goals should drive budget priorities. "I just think that we should make sure that the instructional and enrichment programs are designed to raise achievement, close opportunity gaps, and are made accessible to all," one trustee said when proposing language edits to emphasize access.
Board members stressed the need to revisit goals during the year, to ensure they inform decision‑making rather than remain aspirational statements. Several trustees called for a formal strategic‑planning process to produce more concrete, measurable objectives for next year’s budget cycle.
The board also welcomed its new student representatives, Jocelyn and Maeve, who reported on school openings, PTO events, extracurriculars, and student ideas such as lunch‑line improvements and a Halloween fundraising contest. Trustees and the superintendent thanked the students for participating.
Trustees recognized contributions to recent community events, including the Dragon Stadium ribbon‑cutting; Superintendent Megan and others were thanked for the ceremony. The board acknowledged David, the district’s audio/visual operator, who will be leaving to pursue music full time and was thanked for enabling board meeting broadcasts.
The board adjourned after recording votes on consent and personnel items and listing upcoming community events, including elementary Halloween parades, drama productions, and multicultural night.
What’s next: The board asked administration to post the draft goals for further refinement and to consider measurable next steps; the facilities committee will review the building condition survey in the coming week.
