The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the resident humanitarian coordinator for the Philippines reported that Super Typhoon FangWong (locally known as Juan) made landfall in northern Luzon following an extensive coastal evacuation. The briefing said more than 1.3 million people were preemptively evacuated across 13 of 18 regions and that over 480,000 people remain displaced with more than 6,000 evacuation centres operating.

Arnott Peral, the resident and humanitarian coordinator for the Philippines, commended the government and first responders for efficient preparedness and timely evacuations, saying those actions “undoubtedly saved lives,” according to the briefing.

UN agencies have prepositioned cash assistance, reinforced shelters and worked with national authorities on early recovery assessments. OCHA said partners continue to monitor damage and coordinate response while stressing that stronger storms are more likely as sea temperatures rise with the climate crisis.

The briefing did not present new funding commitments but emphasized coordination with national authorities and partners for further needs assessments and early recovery planning.
