A Mountain View parent told the Mountain View–Los Altos Union High School District board on Oct. 27 that her daughter was publicly humiliated and isolated by varsity volleyball coaches in an episode on Sept. 23, and she urged the district to investigate.
Margaret Peterson, who identified herself as the grandmother or parent in her remarks, described meeting with varsity staff and Athletic Director Tim Lugo and later filing a formal complaint with Kip Glaser, identified in her remarks as a varsity volleyball staff member. Peterson said the coaches held her daughter after practice in a closed, darkened gym and that she observed the student through a window.
“I looked in the window and saw my child standing in the center of the gym, crying to the point of hyperventilating,” Peterson told trustees. She said the assistant coach “chastised a concerned parent for intervening on behalf of her vulnerable child” and that the meeting that followed did not acknowledge the daughter’s distress.
Peterson said she attempted to resolve the issue with coaches and then filed a formal complaint on Oct. 6 after an Oct. 6 meeting she described as placing blame on her daughter instead of acknowledging the coaches’ behavior. She asked the board to look into the incident and to follow up with the family. The board chair responded that parents could forward documents to the board via email and that staff would be available to follow up.
