The Hancock County Commission voted Oct. 9 to award the county’s proposal for operation and management of the Hancock County Bridal Shelter to the Jefferson County Humane Society and directed staff to begin contract negotiations.

The commission’s packet showed one bid was received that met requirements; the commission approved the award by voice vote. The award was recorded as approved 3-0, and commissioners said the county will proceed to negotiate contract terms with the selected organization.

The decision came during the commission’s new-business agenda. The commission did not discuss detailed contract terms at the meeting and specified that contract negotiations will follow. The motion to approve authorized county staff to negotiate the contract; no contract was signed during the meeting.

For the record, commissioners also publicly thanked donors and supporters of the animal shelter during the meeting.

Next steps will include formal contract negotiation between county staff and the Jefferson County Humane Society before any management transition occurs.
