Commissioners reviewed operational items including a proposal to repeat a one-day county "workday" before Christmas to allow staff and volunteers to complete maintenance projects such as tree removal, stump grinding and finishing an unfinished pavilion at the county golf course.
"It gave the guys a little bit of extra little bump in, you know, the overtime pay, and it was very good. So much got accomplished during that day," one commissioner said of a prior workday. Commissioners discussed rotating future workdays by commission district and staging equipment so an efficient, high-priority list of tasks can be completed.
Public Works staff provided examples of projects that could be completed in a single coordinated day: clearing drainage ditches, grinding stumps, finishing pavilions and maintaining ponds and turf. The board suggested scheduling a December date and considered repeating the event annually or semiannually depending on results.
Separately, staff announced that the county gun range is not yet open and asked the public to stop shooting there while berms, targets and equipment remain in place. "We don't need people shooting. So just I wanted to say it here so maybe somebody listened to it. They would know we are working toward opening the gun range," staff said, and recommended temporary fencing or signage until the facility is officially opened.
The commission also noted ongoing insurance and benefits work for staff and encouraged employee participation in upcoming enrollment workshops. No motions changing policy or budget were adopted; the board directed staff to return proposed schedules and a plan for the December workday.
