The Revitalization Trust Fund reported Oct. 30 that the Needham Heights banner design has been approved by the Select Board and that producing and installing the banner set will cost $3,200.
Paul, a member of the Revitalization Trust Fund, said the banners "will say Needham Heights" so drivers know where the neighborhood begins and ends, and described a companion parking banner to mark public parking behind Blue on Highland. The banners are bright blue with white lettering and a yellow dome in the design, he said.
Committee members discussed logistics for installation. Paul said the Select Board has asked town staff to explore attaching a blue parking arrow to a signal pole on Mark Lee to better mark the parking entrance. Paul said the project team hopes to produce the banners in November and have them up by Dec. 1, if donors are found.
The committee agreed to circulate a donor image and solicitation widely. Paul said he will send a picture of both the placemaking banners and the parking banners to committee members to help fundraising. "I will send you, the picture of both of the things," Paul said during the meeting.
Members discussed funding approaches: targeted asks of neighborhood residents and property owners, outreach through local clubs and businesses, and the possibility of asking town staff whether the town might assume funding if private donations are insufficient. Eric, a committee member, noted the banner program "feels more operational" and suggested benchmarking how other towns fund similar programs.
No final funding decision was made. The group recorded a plan to pursue private sponsors and to ask town staff for information about whether the town could take on responsibility for the program if needed.
The committee approved the June minutes and proceeded to other agenda items; the banner funding decision will be revisited once the committee reports back on donor commitments and on a follow-up meeting with town staff.
