The Mobile City Council on Oct. 28 adopted two branding measures, declaring “Born to Celebrate” the city’s official slogan and approving the “Iconic M” as the official city logo.
The City Clerk read Resolution 60-13-94 in full before the council voted to adopt the slogan; later the council read and approved Resolution 60-13-93 to adopt the Iconic M and held a pin and photo ceremony honoring Mayor William S. Stimpson. The clerk’s reading included the language: “Born to celebrate is hereby adopted as the official slogan of the city of Mobile, Alabama.”
Council members moved to suspend the rules and advance both resolutions to the top of the agenda; after the readings the chair put both measures to a roll call voice vote and the clerk announced each item passed. The actions were taken early in the meeting after a motion to reorder the agenda was approved.
During the public-comment period that followed, resident and community speaker Reggie Hill urged the council to preserve the city’s traditional seal and asked why the council would introduce a new logo while saying it wanted to protect tradition. Hill said the city already “has its official seal” and questioned the cost and rationale for adopting a new mark.
Council members and the mayor framed the action as a branding choice to support tourism, events and economic development; the council did not attach a budget appropriation to the two resolutions at the time of the vote.
The council adopted the following items: Resolution 60-13-94 (adopt slogan “Born to Celebrate”) and Resolution 60-13-93 (adopt Iconic M as official logo). The City Clerk read the resolutions on the record and the council approved both. The council held a short ceremony and photographs immediately after the votes.
The measures take effect as official city branding when incorporated into production materials according to the specifications attached to the logo resolution, as the resolution text states. The meeting record does not show a separate spending authorization tied to those branding resolutions.
