Representatives from Michigan State University's LSCP partnership and Extension presented survey findings and led an interactive workshop to begin Ishpeming's strategic-plan process.
Christopher (MSU/LSCP) summarized the research and community survey, noting alignment between council and public priorities on trails and transportation, community development and quality of life. Brad Newman and Will Cronin from Extension facilitated small-group exercises in which council members generated and then consolidated 3- to 5-year action items to populate a draft strategic plan.
Council members and attendees suggested actions including downtown streetscape and façade improvements, activation of downtown with events and family draws (including the skate park), targeted housing development plans (ready-to-build parcels and developer solicitation), continual maintenance and restoration of historic public buildings, and better volunteer recruitment and youth engagement programs. Staff and the MSU team outlined next steps: a public open house the following evening, additional feedback incorporation, and continued drafting leading to a final strategic-plan product.
The session emphasized coordination among existing plans (master plan, DDA plan, parks and recreation) and the strategic plan as a near-term implementation roadmap.
