The Plano City Council voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Julie Homer, who told the council she is resigning to run for county office.
In a brief statement read to the council, Homer said she submitted her resignation after the previous council meeting and said she remains committed to serving until her seat is filled. Councilmembers offered personal remarks and praise before a motion and second to accept the resignation carried on an 8-0 voice vote.
City elections staff outlined the timeline to fill the vacancy. At the council’s Nov. 10 meeting the council will formally call a special election; that action will create the vacancy for candidates to gather signatures. The packet for candidates will be available Nov. 10. A petition requires 103 signatures. The filing period is Nov. 11 through Dec. 1. The deadline to register to vote for the special election is Dec. 31. Early voting is scheduled Jan. 14–27, with election day Jan. 31; any runoff, if required, would be held in April because of the primary calendar.
Council members expressed regret at Homer’s departure and thanked her for her service, and they said the council will proceed to fill the vacancy according to the announced calendar.
