A Utah League of Cities and Towns representative announced that the National League of Cities city summit will be held in Salt Lake City this November and said Tim Shriver will speak as a keynote.
"NLC rarely comes to the Mountain West or the West at all," the representative said, calling the summit "an incredible opportunity" for Utah officials to "interact not only with your peers from Utah, the Mountain West, but to get best practices about what's happening nationally." The representative added that the league worked with organizers to secure special one‑day and reduced full‑conference rates for Utah attendees.
The announcement came as the league previewed an expanded training program aimed at newly elected municipal officials. The speaker said the league has broadened its "elected officials essentials" offerings and will add a series of webinars on land use, budget and finance, conflict competence and the Utah legislative session. The league also plans a tailored training for rural officials "on how exactly it is you run a rural community when you don't have staff," the representative said.
The league said it will update key reference materials, noting that its "Powers and Duties" guide is revised every two years and that the finance guide "Making Sense of Dollars" has not been updated in about two decades. "So we're excited to have that going, for everyone as well," the representative said.
The representative described the conflict‑competence training as a response to recent incidents of violence and polarization and said the training has drawn significant interest: "we have over a 100 local officials signed up for that training," she said, and that a few additional spots had been opened.
The speaker encouraged attendees to consider joining the league's state night and other events. She listed several calendar items: state night on Friday, November 21; "Local Officials Stay at the Legislature" on Wednesday, January 21; a midyear conference in April in St. George; and the league's annual convention next October. She then yielded the floor to Justin for further remarks.
The announcement did not include registration deadlines, fee amounts, or the year for the annual convention; attendees were told to contact league staff for details and registration availability.
