Commissioner Maldonado summarized multiple approvals from the Jan. 14 Art in Public Places (AIPP) panel, including final designs for Longhorn Dam Bridge, Beverly Sheffield Pool and Highland Park; the panel also approved RFQs and selections for airport and corridor sites.
Commissioner Monica Maldonado, the Arts Commission’s liaison to the Art in Public Places (AIPP) panel, briefed the Austin Arts Commission on actions taken at the Jan. 14 AIPP meeting.
Maldonado reported the panel approved several final designs and procurement steps: the Longhorn Dam Bridge final design by artist Original Adams; the Beverly Sheffield Pool final design by Son McGowan; and Highland Park art by Samara Barks. The panel approved a pre-final design by Wanda Montemayor for the South Lamar Corridor. Maldonado also said the AIPP panel issued requests for qualifications (RFQs) including one for the Saint John Wright site redevelopment, and completed a selection process for Phase I public art at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Commissioners asked for clarification about accessibility features on presentation videos and requested captions or higher volume for future updates; staff said captioning and video volume were being managed and would be improved. Maldonado invited questions about specific projects and offered to circulate more details on individual designs.
Why it matters
Art in Public Places decisions establish permanent and temporary public artworks that shape the lived environment of downtown corridors, lakeside bridges and civic pools. Final design approvals typically follow concept selection and public-review steps and move projects closer to fabrication and installation.
No formal vote on AIPP governance or funding occurred at the Jan. 27 Arts Commission meeting; Maldonado’s report was informational.
