Summary
The Warr Acres Economic Development Authority voted to retroactively approve submission of a Route 66 Centennial grant application seeking up to $47,500 to install a standardized Route 66 sign; city staff said the application requests state funds and allows for a local cost share if needed.
The Warr Acres Economic Development Authority (EDA) voted Feb. 18 to approve the submission of a Route 66 Centennial grant application to fund a Route 66 entrance sign and related site work.
City staff told the EDA the Oklahoma Route 66 Commission is awarding grants for centennial projects in 2026. The city submitted an application for one standardized Route 66 sign and related site preparation work with a total project cost estimated at $47,500. Staff said the application asks the commission for the full amount but also shows available local matching funds if the commission awards less than the requested sum.
Staff and EDA members discussed project elements: sign fabrication and installation, modest electrical work, and removal or trimming of Bradford pear trees that could obstruct visibility. The staff presentation noted the grant program pays only against submitted invoices; the city would not be obligated to spend local funds unless it approved them later.
The EDA voted to approve the application and to allow staff to proceed with follow‑up steps, including signing required grant forms and returning to the EDA or council for any decision to commit city funds.
