The City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved the previous meeting minutes and reappointed its chair and vice chair for 2025 at a regular meeting on Jan. 13, 2025.
The five-member voting sequence for appointments followed nominations from the floor. Chair Winston made the motion to approve the minutes “as presented,” which Commissioner Racinas seconded; the motion carried unanimously. During nominations, a commissioner nominated Winston to remain chair for 2025; Commissioner Gisbert seconded that nomination and the commission voted unanimously to appoint Winston to the chair position for a term ending December 2025. Vice chair Alleman was nominated for another year and, after a second from Commissioner Knight, the commission also voted unanimously to appoint Alleman to a term ending December 2025.
The nominations were conducted under the commission’s standard practice of taking separate motions for chair and vice chair. Chair Winston thanked the commission after the vote, saying, “Thank you very, very much. Appreciate your support.”
Why it matters: The annual appointments set the commission’s leadership for the year and determine who presides over future meetings and represents the commission at City Council and partner events.
The votes were procedural and uncontested; the commission did not debate alternatives or amend the nomination process. The commission confirmed that Ashley Benson will be the new staff contact for commissioners following recent staff changes. Commissioners were reminded that City Council will consider two commission seat appointments at its Jan. 14 meeting and that the commission’s Feb. 11 meeting may be canceled if no action items arise.
Members present for the unanimous votes were Commissioner Revel, Commissioner Knight, Commissioner Gisbert, Commissioner Sander, Commissioner Racinas, Commissioner Alleman and Chair Winston. No roll-call opposition, abstentions or recusals were recorded.
