Two public commenters during the Feb. 18 Birmingham City Council meeting raised neighborhood issues the council or staff are scheduled to address.
Paul Godby, president of the Southside Neighbors Association, told the council he has prepared a classification proposal for short‑term rentals after consulting short‑term rental owners and provided early copies to Councilors Smitherman and Quinn and to staff (Kim Speer). Godby said he expected the item to be on the Planning & Zoning Committee agenda on Feb. 26; he noted the Feb. 26 presentation to the committee would not be a public hearing but that a public hearing would occur later before the full city council.
Toya Morrow, a resident of the New Southtown development, told the council she wants more police patrols inside and outside her building, action on stray dogs running loose, and stronger parking enforcement for outsiders parking on the property on weekends. She supplied an address and said these issues primarily occur when the rental office is closed.
Neither item generated a formal council vote at the Feb. 18 meeting. The Planning & Zoning Committee schedule for Feb. 26 was referenced in the transcript as the next step for the short‑term rental discussion.
