The Miami‑Dade County Airport Committee on Thursday approved short emergency extensions to two janitorial contracts to keep cleaning services running at Miami International Airport through Feb. 28.
Committee members voted to extend two previously ratified emergency contracts that were enacted about six months ago while the county’s procurement department completes selection of permanent vendors. The committee heard that one extension covers roughly $2,000,000 for a six‑month period and the other covers about $1,300,000 for four months; both expire Feb. 28, the director said.
The committee’s vote to approve item 3C passed without recorded opposition. Three committee members were present for the meeting and the chair declared the motion passed.
Members raised complaints about the current state of janitorial service at Miami International Airport and stressed closer oversight of contractors. “If you’re going to bid, make sure that you can provide good service at that price,” Chair Cabrera said during discussion, urging bidders not to submit low offers they cannot meet. Several commissioners asked for regular updates on facility maintenance and vendor performance.
No representatives of the two firms were present at the meeting, the airport director said. Staff described the extensions as short‑term continuity measures while the county finalizes permanent contracts through procurement.
The committee also voted to waive two unrelated items (3A and 3D) to the Feb. 22 Board of County Commissioners meeting.
The committee did not adopt any additional contracting conditions during the vote; commissioners asked staff to provide more frequent progress updates on janitorial performance and other airport maintenance items at future meetings.
