Pryor Creek City Council held a public hearing and approved on first reading an ordinance to change zoning for a 4-acre L-shaped property owned by Robert L. Schaefer from Residential Single-Family (RS) to Agricultural (AG).
At the hearing, Schaefer said the property has historically been used for livestock pasture. He told council members the 1-acre home site where a house once stood will remain, and the remaining acreage will continue to be pasture for cattle and horses. Schaefer said the land is held for his son in a will and that the family intends to keep the acreage "the way that it is." He acknowledged a recent complaint from a neighbor about grass height and said he arranged for mowing to address the issue.
Planning and zoning staff recommended approval; no members of the public registered opposition at the hearing. A council member suggested improving notice procedures so residents receive clearer notification when zoning changes are proposed.
After the public hearing, the council moved and approved first reading of the ordinance changing the property from RS to AG. The vote was recorded by roll call with the majority voting yes.
Why it matters
Rezoning from RS to AG formally aligns the parcel’s municipal zoning classification with surrounding agricultural parcels and the owner’s stated intent to maintain pasture, which may affect permitted uses and future development potential for that lot.
What’s next
The council approved first reading and waived additional reading; the ordinance will return for subsequent readings consistent with city procedures before final adoption.
